The focus of the Junior High music program is to help students to enhance their skills and be active contributors to the performance ensemble. The curriculum fosters skills in sight-reading, ear training, and the ability to read and understand the written musical page, as well as focusing on and following the conductor. The curriculum encourages students to develop an understanding of the elements of music including rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and tone color, while fully engaging students in hands-on learning through the use of interactive learning, choral conducting, hand chimes, bucket drumming, ukulele and other Orff-inspired methods. Emphasis is also placed on vocal technique and breath control, and expressive musicianship with technical accuracy.
This is a year-long course that explores choral music from a wide variety of cultures and time periods through study and performance. The core curriculum emphasizes the basics of vocal technique, sight-reading, music theory, and music history. Students in Choir participate in several performance opportunities throughout the year including Fall and Spring concerts, performances at local churches, and our annual Spring Gala. Every odd year the choir travels to and participates in a Choral Fest music festival during the Spring semester.
Chapel Worship Team
The chapel worship team is designed for specifically selected students to collaborate as a team and lead the student body in worship during weekly chapels and other assembly gatherings. Students will learn how to put worship set lists together; format songs for live stage presentation; foster team building and encouraging behaviors; discipline themselves in practice, fellowship, and Bible study. There are opportunities for this team to travel to other schools and events to lead worship.
